2/25 – 2/26
This sign, just after passing Gilbert’s heading South, says
“Welcome to the Keys”, the official waterway entrance
to the Keys on the inside. We decided to travel on the Gulf side,
through Card Sound and into Florida Bay. It was a little windy, which
makes for rough water in the ocean. These birds nesting on mile markers
are a common sight down here. Boats like ours can pass from the gulf
side to the ocean side or vice versa at this opening in the famed
Seven Mile Bridge, just south of Marathon. At this point all cruisers
and sailboats heading South must go out into the ocean to make the
rest of the run to Key West because of very shallow water in the inside;
the ICW ends here. Now we were once again in the Southern Keys.
